Prototyping and Wrapping Up Our Design Challenge

Hello everyone!

In our last blog post, we shared the behind-the-scenes of our inspiration phase. We researched our market, interviewed stakeholders, and surveyed our target audience to evaluate where they already are in their adulting process. After organizing our feedback and survey data, it was time to start prototyping!

Our survey revealed our target audience was most interested in learning about securing housing, paying taxes, and getting insurance. Therefore, we decided to focus on these three topics as we developed our prototype.

For our first iteration, we created a PowerPoint mockup. Our main goal was to translate the user needs we uncovered through our survey into an easy-to-navigate interface. We then filmed a walkthrough demo for our focus group to get their initial feedback.

We left our focus group with three main takeaways.

  1. Only some people interested in using our app will start at ground zero. Some people might know more about specific adulting topics, while others lack the same experience.

  2. Beyond learning modules, people are interested in interacting with others on the app. This factor of social connectivity inspired us to add a community dashboard where you can share updates and chat with others.

  3. Users would be more motivated to use the app if they could collect badges or other rewards for their learning.

Considering all these insights, we made a sleeker and more comprehensive clickthrough demo of our app on Canva. For this iteration, we focused more on the details, such as the color scheme, font choice, and logo, to create a unified brand identity.

The most significant difference in this version is that it incorporated a short survey for users to fill out after creating their account to evaluate what topic areas they feel more confident in and what skills they want to learn from the app. We also focused on laying out the learning modules page and example questions since that is what our audience is most interested in! This prototype allowed us to get to the meat and potatoes of what Adult.ly is all about.

Final Prototype Adult.Ly

Even though our Digital Innovations Capstone course is ending, we wanted to think ahead about the following steps to bring Adult.ly to reality. At this stage, we’d hold another focus group to get feedback on our second prototype to solidify which features to keep and expand on still unclear ones. Then, we would begin pitching our app to universities, local career centers, and other organizations focused on helping young adults gain financial independence. We’d also draw up a social media campaign to gain traction for our app and begin looking for partnerships to fund the app’s launch.
